First American In Space

Alan B. Shepard, Jr. became the first American in space when on May 5, 1961 at 9:34am EST he lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Freedom 7 as a part of the Mercury program. He achieved a suborbital altitude of 116.5 miles. He landed successfully in the Atlantic Ocean after 15 min, 28 seconds.
