The First Civilian Tourist In Space
Amid controversy, California business man Dennis Tito became the first civilian and paying tourist in space when he took off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket on April 28, 2001.
Tito paid an estimated $20 million for the eight day trip to the International Space Station. NASA officials believed that the timing was not right for a civilian to visit the station due to safety concerns and a potential work slowdown during the installation of the Canadian robotic arm.
