The First Israeli Astronaut Launches Into Space
Colonel Ilan Ramon became the first Israeli astronaut when he launched on the space shuttle Columbia on January 16, 2003 for shuttle mission STS-107. Ramon is a national hero in Israel where he was a combat pilot during both the Yom Kippur War of 1973 and Lebanon War of 1982. Due to terrorist concerns the shuttle mission was the subject of the highest level of security in NASA history. Ramon was the Payload Specialist for the scientific mission.
