The First Black Female Astronaut

Dr. Mae Carol Jemison became the first black female astronaut when she took off on board the space shuttle Endeavor on September 12, 1992 in mission STS-47. Born on October 17, 1956 as the youngest of three children, Mae became a medical doctor and worked for several charitable causes before joining NASA in 1987. During the 1992 mission she conducted biological and material science experiments.

She left NASA in 1993 for a teaching position and has been seen on the Discovery Channel and also appeared in an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
