Space Shuttle Columbia Breaks Up Over TexasHistorical EventsAt approximately 8:00 am central time on February 1, 2003 the space shuttle Columbia broke up at 200,000 feet over central and Eastern Texas while travelling at 12,500 miles per hour. The shuttle was due to land at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 9:00 am Eastern after completing a 16-day scientific mission (STS-107). Lost in the disaster were astronauts: Rick Husband (Commander), William McCool (Pilot), Michael Anderson (Payload Commander), David Brown (Mission Specialist), Kalpana Chawla (Mission Specialist), Laurel Clark (Mission Specialist) and Ilan Ramon (Payload Specialist).
