Israel Is Declared An Independent State

Following a November 1947 United Nations vote Israel was officially declared an independent state on May 14, 1948. After years of unrest and political posturing with the Arabs and Zionists the declaration triggered an invasion by Egypt, Syria, Transjordan, Lebanon and Iraq. After 15 months the Israelis managed to defend and expand its holdings in the area before reaching an armistice. To this day, control of the region is in dispute.
