1972 Summer Olympics: The Munich Massacre
On September 5, 1972 a group of Arab terrorists entered the Olympic Village in Munich, Germany during the summer Olympic Games. It was later learned that the terrorists belonged a Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) faction called, Black September. A number of Israeli athletes were taken hostage and the group demanded the release of 200 Arab prisoners and safe passage out of Germany.
Due to a miscalculation by the German authorities a plan to kill the terrorists at a NATO air base at Firstenfeldbruck failed. All eleven hostages were killed. Five terrorists and a policeman were also killed. Three remaining terrorists were captured, but released on October 29th after a Lufthansa jet was hijacked. The three released along with eight others were targeted by an Israeli assassination squad. Eight of the eleven were killed, one died of natural causes and the remaining two were killed under unknown circumstances.
