The Russian Sputnik 1 spacecraft was the first man made object placed into orbit. It was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome at Tyuratam in Kazakhstan on October 4, 1957. The word "Sputnik" means "companion" in Russian. Sputnik 1 was a 58.0 cm-diameter aluminium sphere that carried four whip-like antennas. The satellite transmitters operated for three weeks, until the on-board chemical batteries failed. The achievement sparked a heated space race between the U.S.S.R. and the United States.
