Voyager 1 - The Most Distant Object

Technology

At 7.8 billion miles from earth, the most distant man made object is Voyager 1. It was originally launched on September 5, 1977 and its mission was originally intended only to last four years, but Voyager 1, along with it's mate Voyager 2, continue to beam information back to earth from the darkness of space. It takes 23 hours for communications to make the round trip from earth to the probe and back again.

The 1-ton Voyager 1 spacecraft carries a 12-inch, gold-plated copper disk containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. It also includes printed messages from then-President Carter and U.N. Secretary General Kurt Waldheim.
