First Nuclear ExplosionHistorical EventsThe United States exploded the first nuclear bomb on July 16, 1945 as a part of the Manhattan Project. The successful bomb test, code-named "Trinity", at Alamogordo, New Mexico took place at 5:30 am in a remote section of the Alamogordo Air Base. The weapon was mounted at the top of a 100 foot steel tower and had a yield of 15 to 20 kilotons (15,000 to 20,000 thousand tons of TNT).
