The First Appearance of Mickey Mouse
The universal symbol for Disney, Mickey Mouse, first appeared in a cartoon short called "Steamboat Willie." The film was firsdt shown on November 18, 1928 at New York's Colony Theatre. The film showed an irreverent rodent who takes Captain Pete's steamboat on a joyride and woos Minnie Mouse by making music on the bodies of various farm animals.
According to official Disney history, Mickey was created by Walt Disney (who referred to the character as "this friendly little guy") during a cross-country train ride from New York back home to Los Angeles in 1928. Disney originally named the mouse Mortimer, but his wife, Lillian, thought the name too pompous and suggested Mickey.
