The Curse of the Bambino
The Boston Red Sox have been plagued since 1919 with awful performances and rotten luck due to what has been called the curse of the Bambino.
In 1914 the Red Sox bought the contract for George Herman "The Babe" Ruth from the minor-league Baltimore Orioles. In the time that Ruth played for the Sox they won four world series and set many batting and pitching records.
In 1919 after a contract dispute that saw Ruth sign for $100,000 per year (half what he thought he was worth), Ruth no longer wanted to pitch and didn't get along with Harry Frazee, the new team owner. Before the 1920 season Ruth was sold to Colonel Jacob Ruppert's New York Yankees for $100,000, plus a loan collateralized by Fenway Park (regarded as the worst trade in baseball history).
Since then the Red Sox have lost in all four of it's World Series appearances. The New York Yankees have won 26 World Series Championships.
