TWA Flight 800 Crashes
At 8:31 p.m. over the Atlantic Ocean near East Moriches, New York Trans World Airlines flight 800 from New York to Paris exploded in air and crashed into the ocean twelve minutes after take-off. All on board were killed, including 2 pilots, 2 flight engineers, 14 flight attendants, and 212 passengers.
There were several theories for what caused the crash, including a shoulder fired ground to air missile, but the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined that the probable cause was an explosion in the center wing fuel tank caused by fault in the electrical system.
