In the early morning hours of April 2, 2001 the fishing vessel Arctic Rose sank in the icy waters of the Bering Sea. All 15 crew members were lost, including Captain Rundall, the only body recovered. No distress calls were sent by the crew and only an emergency beacon notified anyone of the disaster.

Two remotely operated vehicle (ROV) missions run by the Coast Guard failed to uncover a definitive cause for the sinking.
