After winning a legal battle against company director Walter Hewlett (the son of one of HP's co-founders) who had been trying to block the deal, HP and Compaq completed the HP's acquisition of Compaq and officially changed its NYSE stock symbol to HPQ on Monday, May 6, 2002. The $18.5 billion stock swap deal is the largest ever in the information technology industry.
