On April 4, 1968 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated in Memphis, Tenn., by James Earl Ray. King, who had received death threats throughout his life, was the most influential and remembered leader of the civil rights movement.

Just about every city in the United States has a street that bears his name and since 1986, the third Monday of January has been celebrated as a national holiday in his honour.
