Adriana Iliescu (age 66) gave birth to a baby girl, named Eliza Maria, on January 16, 2005 via Caesarean section at the Giulesti Maternity Hospital in Bucharest. The girl was born prematurly after her twin sister died in the womb. At birth she weighed just 3lb (1.4kg).

Ms Iliescu, a retired university professor and author of children's books, had been undergoing fertility treatments for nine years before conceiving. She was artificially inseminated with the sperm of an anonymous donator.

Iliescu is the world's oldest recorded woman to give birth. The previous record holder was a 65-year-old Satyabhama Mahapatra from Nayagarh, India who gave birth to a boy in 2003.
