The New York Subway Opens

Construction & Engineering

On October 27, 1904 the New York subway system opened with an inaugural trip carrying Mayor George B. McClellan Jr. the 9.1 miles from City Hall to 145th Street. The fare was 5 cents.

Since then the system has grown to 722 miles (and continues to expand); the largest underground railway system in the world. It costs $5 billion per year to operate the system and it carries 4.5 million passengers daily.
