The most powerful computer in the world is the ASCI White supercomputer constructed by IBM for U.S. Department of Energy. Constructed for the Department of Energy's Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative (ASCI), it was developed by IBM in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and then installed in a newly renovated computer center in the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California. The computer incorporates 8192 375 MHz copper-based processors, six terabytes of memory and 160 terabytes of disk storage. The ASCI White earns the record by being capable of processing 12288 Gigaflops or 12.30 teraflops (trillions of operations/second) which is more than double its nearest competitor. ASCI White will be used to simulate the ageing and operation of a nuclear weapon as a part of the Department Of Energy's stewardship over the nation's stockpile of nuclear weapons.
