Longest-Serving Senator In Congressional History

Senator Strom Thurmond from South Carolina was the longest-serving member of the upper house of Congress. He retired from the Senate at the end of 2002, just one month after his 100th birthday, after 47 years and 5 months in the Senate. Thurmond died six months later on June 26th, 2003.
