First Man To Reach The South Pole
Captain Roald Amundsen was the first to reach the South Pole when he and his four Norwegian Antarctic Expedition compatriots planted the Norwegian flag on December 14, 1911. The expedition took 53 days after leaving base camp, setting an average of 25 kilometres per day. Amundsen beat an English expedition lead by Captain Robert Scott by more than a month.
