The Carpathia Is Sunk By German Torpedoes
On July 17, 1918, the Carpathia was steaming in convoy from Liverpool to Boston, when it was hit by two torpedoes from the German U-boat. A third torpedo hit the ship while the lifeboats were being lowered, killing five of the crew (the only casualties). The ship sunk off the Irish coast the next day. The surviving crew and 157 passengers were returned safely to Liverpool.
The Carpathia is best known for rescuing 705 survivors from the Titanic when it hit an iceberg in April 1912.
