The Largest Art Object On Earth
With faces standing 60 feet tall and 500 feet up, the Mount Rushmore National Monument is the largest art object in the world. The four faces of American presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln are carved into the face of Mount Rushmore (named for Charles E. Rushmore) in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Sculptor Gutzon Borglum began carving the mountain on August 10, 1927 and, along with 400 workers, would work on the monument until his death in 1941. Borglum's original plan called for all four presidents to be carved in detail down to the waist, but after his death it was never completed.
