The Exclusion Act of 1923
On July 1, 1923 the Exclusion Act passed by the Canadian government came into effect. The act prevented immigrant Chinese and aboriginal people in Canada from voting or becoming Canadian Citizens.
During World War II Chinese that joined the armed forces were granted citizenship, but it would not be until 1947 when the act was repealed that all Chinese in Canada could become citizens of Canada.
