The Largest Landfill Site In The World Closes

Oddities

The Fresh Kills landfill site on the western shore of Staten Island, New York accepted its last barge of garbage on March 22, 2001. The site opened in 1948 and originally occupied 2,900 acres but was downsized to 2,200 acres. At its peak in 1986-87 the landfill accepted 29,000 tons of garbage a day.

On September 12, 2001 the site was temporarily reopened and designated a crime scene, to process the 1.8 million tons of material from the World Trade Center collapse. Thousands of people worked the site to recover human remains, personal objects and evidence from the disaster. The site closed again in July 2002.
